  • welding is performed without preliminary preparation of the edges;
  • it is economically expedient to use it already starting from 40 mm, but more often it is used for welding thicknesses of 100-500 mm;
  • the timing of welding operations compared to manual arc welding is reduced by more than 50 times.

Welding equipment that we use in our work: is created on the basis of the new ACP apparatus 113 M 2 (EO Paton Institute of NAS of Ukraine) the mobile section allows to weld a large number of joints (S = 60 mm) in the territory of a large construction object under the conditions of installation.

Electroslag welding (ESW) — one of the types of fusion welding, is based on the release of heat as electric current passes through the molten slag. The edges of the metal to be welded, at a certain distance from each other, are heated to the melting point, and the space between them is filled with a molten filler metal.

Электрошлаковая сварка, схемаFor apply the ESW using method of the forced formation, comprising artificial cooling of the free surface of the slag and the metal baths. As the forming devices serving to hold the slag bath in the gap, copper water-cooled slides or lining are used. ESW operate mainly in vertical stacking of welded joints of parts.

Electroslag welding is carried out in various ways, depending on the types of electrodes and methods of introducing them into the suture preparation.

The following basic methods of electroslag welding are known:
 

  • with wire electrodes;
     
  • with melt  mouthpiece;
     
  • electrodes of large cross section.

The method of electroslag welding was developed in the early 50's in the Paton Institute of Electric Welding  Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. The method was awarded the highest prize (Grand Prix) at the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1958, where Soviet equipment for ESW was exhibited, was successful at many other international exhibitions: in New York, Marseilles, Helsinki, London, etc.

The wide use of this progressive method of join metals has made it possible to fundamentally change the production and installation of large machines and structures. It became possible to weld parts of practically unlimited thickness to the assembly site without their subsequent machining.

Application   technology of electroslag welding (instead of manual) for reinforcing the openings of the belts of building columns type as the "Maltese Cross"  for underground floors of high-rise buildings has significantly increased labor productivity, significantly improved the culture of welding operations, and reduced the number of workers.
